Northern State Medical University
The cooperation between Northern State Medical University (NSMU), the Russian Medical Education Agency (RMEA) and the Freiburg International Academy provides graduates from Northern State Medical University with an optimal start into the German health care system.
Established in 1932, NSMU is located in the beautiful city of Arkhangelsk, in the northern part of European Russia, and is the biggest and best-known medical university in Northern Russia.
The university is recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization), the WFME (World Federation of Medical Education), the FAIMER (Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research), the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates), the Medical Council of India and the Medical Board of Thailand. NSMU is also a member of the University of the Arctic, a cooperative network of 160 universities from all over the world. The university network opens doors for exchanges, courses and further careers all around the globe.
Facts and figures
NSMU was rated by Forbes in 2019 under the TOP 100 universities among 1000 Russian universities. Today the university is ranked under the TOP 5 among medical schools in Russia.
There are currently approximately 5,000 full-time students enrolled at NSMU, 1,100 of whom are international students from over 15 countries. Overall, there are 55 departments, 27 of which are clinical departments and are located in the best hospitals of the city. NSMU offers the following study programmes in English: Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and a Master’s Degree in Public Health.
Possibilities for an international medical career
More than 40,000 doctors have already graduated from the university. Many hundreds of graduates are currently working abroad across almost 60 countries like the USA, the UK, Canada, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Netherlands and Denmark.
Apart from the fact that all study programmes are offered in English, the university provides Russian language courses for all students. This is highly relevant for communicating with hospital staff and patients. Interested students receive a preparation course for the licensing exams (accreditation) in order to practice in Russia after graduation. Students enrolled in the programme not only receive a diploma but also an additional certificate from the Russian Federation recognized by the German Ministry of Health. Any graduate from NSMU with a diploma and this certificate has the possibility to submit documents for professional licensing in Germany in order to prepare and pass the necessary exams.
Together with the Freiburg International Academy, NSMU is the only university in Russia to offer a preparation course and to support graduated physicians, dentists, pharmacists and nurses in recognizing their professional qualifications in Germany. Exam training and preparation in Germany is conducted by certified German teachers and doctors. While studying at NSMU students are given the opportunity to visit Germany for introductory purposes. For the period of study in Russia and Germany the necessary visa support is provided by the university and their partners.
