Important information: New regulations for the professional language test in the state of Hessen as of January 2022

For holders of a degree from an EU country, the FIA C1 PKT professional language for medicine / dentistry / pharmacy is currently recognized by the Federal State of Hessen.

Holders of a degree from outside the EU must take the C1 professional language test offered only by the Hessen State Medical Association.

The FIA C1 PKT remains valid as proof of sufficient professional language skills for all degrees in the Federal State of Saarland.

You can obtain up-to-date information regarding this from the licensing authority responsible for you.

Target

The test serves to determine the required professional language proficiency in oral and written communication for the doctor / dentist / pharmacist profession and is based on language level C1 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). With this test, you can prove your professional language skills and communication skills required for the profession in accordance with the requirements of the Health Ministers Conference (GMK).

The test is based on the Key Issue Paper to review the German language skills required for practicing the profession in the academic health professions of the 87th Health Ministers Conference of June 2014.

The Patient Communication Test Professional Language Medicine is a practice-oriented communication test consisting of three parts.


Examination part 1

Doctor-doctor communication / written documentation / Duration: 20 minutes

On the basis of doctor's notes on patient data, the examinee writes a short documentation.

Examination part 2

Doctor-doctor communication / patient presentation / Duration: 20 minutes

In a simulated direct interview with a senior physician, the examinee should show that they could adequately and accurately present and discuss a brief summary of a patient's case.

Examination part 3

Doctor-patient communication / patient education / Duration: 20 minutes

On the basis of a standardized information sheet, the examinee should show that they can appropriately and correctly conduct an information discussion (presentation of the indication, the procedure, the possible risks and complications as well as the alternative methods of the intervention).


There is a preparation time of 30 minutes for the second and third exam parts.

In each of the three parts of the examination, at least 60% of the maximum number of points must be achieved in order to pass the Patient Communication Test oriented at language level C1.

The Patient Communication Test Professional Language Pharmacy is a practice-oriented communication test consisting of three parts.


Examination part 1

Pharmacist-pharmacist communication / written documentation / Duration: 20 minutes

On the basis of notes on patient data, the examinee draws up a report on adverse drug reactions (ADR) based on the report of the Pharmaceutical Commission of German Pharmacists.

Examination part 2

Pharmacist-pharmacist communication / patient presentation-professional discussion / Duration: 20 minutes

In a simulated direct conversation with another pharmacist, the examinee should show that they could summarize and discuss an existing patient case appropriately and correctly. In addition, the examinee discusses a job-related topic.

Examination part 3

Pharmacist-patient-communication / patient education / Duration: 20 minutes

On the basis of a standardized information sheet, the examinee should show that they could appropriately and correctly conduct an information discussion (presentation of the indication, the procedure, the possible risks and complications as well as the alternative methods of the intervention).


There is a preparation time of 30 minutes for the second and third exam parts.

Examination Board, result, repetition, certificate

The members of the Examination Board (trained language teachers and specialist examiners of the relevant departments) assess the examination according to a uniform, structured scheme and communicate the result to the examinee immediately after the examination. In the case of a C1 level, a certificate will be issued on the day of the exam. If not, the exam may be repeated as often as desired, but it cannot be repeated earlier than three weeks after the exam date.

Entry requirements

B2 language skills with a certificate must be demonstrated (with a copy of the certificate at the time of enrollment and the original on the day of the exam). A confirmation of participation is not sufficient.

Costs

450,- Euro

Cancellation: Cancellation of an agreed examination date is not possible. The examination costs must be paid in full and cannot be reimbursed.

The recognition of our PKT certificates is the responsibility of the licensing authorities in the respective federal states. We therefore recommend that you first contact the responsible licensing authority.
